John Hamlon - Talk on Familiaris Consortio

John Hamlon, M.A. - St. John Paul II on Marriage and Family:  Created out of Love, for Love
St. John Paul II—in his exhortation Familiaris Consortio—spells out God’s plan for marriage and family, and issues a perennial challenge: “Family, become what you are.” Today that challenge rings out more clearly and insistently because the Catholic view of marriage and family is more critically needed than ever. What is that view? Why does  St. John Paul II see marriage as a “primordial” sacrament? What is the family’s fundamental vocation? What “laws” drive spousal and familial love? Such questions and St. John Paul II’s answers are the gist for this talk.

John Hamlon, MA was the  associate director of the St. Ignatius Institute at USF from 1994-2001 and taught an upper-division theology course on marriage at USF for 14 years. Prior to that, he was the program director for national and international conferences on NFP, marriage and family at St. John’s University.  He’s the author of A Call to Families: A Commentary and Study Guide for Familiaris Consortio (revised 2015). He and his wife, Kathi, founded the first NFP center in San Francisco and he now gives courses on St. John Paul II’s thought in the Western US.
