October 20, 2019: The Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time - The Shrine of  St. Jude

Founded in 1935 to be a beacon of hope and prayer for a country gripped by the Great Depression, the Shrine of St. Jude the Apostle at St. Dominic Parish continues to be a source of comfort for many. At first glance the statue of St. Jude may seem to be one image among many in our beautiful church, but it is by far the most visited side altar!

The Shrine office receives hundreds of requests for prayers and sacramentals each week. The Dominican Friars here in San Francisco take these prayer requests very seriously remembering them in our chanting of the Divine Office, our personal intentions, and our celebration of the Holy Eucharist especially at the weekday 5:30 p.m. Masses and the 1:30 p.m. Sunday Spanish Mass which are all dedicated in a special way to St. Jude.

Many faithful also personally visit and make pilgrimages to the Shrine every day to seek the powerful intercession of St. Jude. With the Feast of Sts. Simon and Jude celebrated each October 28, this month sees the greatest number of pilgrims.

A pilgrimage is a sacred journey undertaken to visit a sacred place, to honor the Lord and his Saints, or to make a special petition of prayer. Often an inner conversion or growth results from the journey. As sacrifices are made to reach the holy destination, so we are inwardly strengthened in response to the Grace of God. This October, thousands will make spiritual and actual pilgrimages in honor of St. Jude Thaddeus to his sacred Shrine. In becoming sacred pilgrims in honor of Christ and St. Jude, we will open our hearts to the interior change offered by the gift of God’s mercy.

I would like to invite each of you to join us on this spiritual pilgrimage! The novena will occur here at St. Dominic’s October 20-28. The special Novena Masses are the 11:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Masses on Sunday and the 8:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Masses on weekdays. The Rosary will be said before or after these Masses, the blessing with the relic of St. Jude will be offered, and confessions will be available. On Saturday, October 26, the annual pilgrimage walk will be made from the Church of the Epiphany beginning with Mass and devotions at 8:00 a.m. and ending in a bilingual Mass at St. Dominic’s celebrated by Bishop Justice. The homilies will also be posted daily on our website wwww.stjude-shrine.org and on both Facebook and Twitter @stjudesf.

This year our preacher is Fr. Lawrence Lew, a Dominican Friar of our English Province. He will speak of “Providence and the Hallowing of Time.” We pray for him as he undertakes this sacred journey to visit us and for the hearts of all who will hear him. Above all, let us honor Christ, the first pilgrim, who left his home with the Father to journey to find us. May we at every moment undertake our own sacred pilgrimage to in turn find Him.

St. Jude Pray for us!

Very Rev. Vincent M. Kelber, O.P

Prior and Shrine Director
